Originally a farming community founded by German Catholics, Shively was incorporated in 1938 to accommodate a number of distilleries (most of them since closed) that didn't want to pay Louisville taxes. The present population is over 15,000. Shively is close to downtown, the Ohio River, and Louisville International Airport. Its housing options include older houses on tree-lined streets and subdivisions with starter-priced homes.
