Bellemeade, proud home of the Isaac Shelby Campus of the University of Louisville, is located in Jefferson County and was incorporated on September 24, 1956, as a 6th Class City. On December 1, 1973, Bellemeade annexed nearby Moorgate. Bellemeade covers .3 square miles with a population of 871 people having a median age of 53 years. Bounded by the Shelbyville Road and the Whipps Mill Road, Bellemeade was a recent recipient of the "Tree City USA" award, thanks to the hard work of their City Beautification Committee and the residents of Bellemeade. Community spirit runs high as evidenced by the fact that every spring residents of Bellemeade band together for their annual community yard sale. Visitors to the area enjoy the nearby Thomas Edison Housewhich houses many exhibits of Mr. Edison's ingenious inventions.
